Indian Head Massage is a holistic therapy that is truly one of the most relaxing treatments available.
It provides a powerful massage to slow the body down, reduce stress levels and more.
What is an Indian Head Massage?
Practised in India for over 5000 years, it’s based on the ancient Ayurvedic system, (science of life) and is said to be the world’s oldest healthcare system.
The two main guiding principles are:
1) That the mind and the body are inextricably connected.
2) That nothing has more power to heal and transform the body than the mind.
This isn’t as complicated as it may sound. For example, when you meditate, you effortlessly enter a state of inner quiet that refreshes the mind and restores balance. Since the mind and body are inseparable, the body is naturally balanced through the practice of meditation. In this restful state, your heart rate and breathing slow, your body decreases the production of “stress” hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and you increase the production of Neurotransmitters that enhance well-being, including serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins.
What are the benefits of Indian head massage?
Indian Head Massage, (IHM), promotes total relaxation as the massage helps with feelings of well-being and calm. However, it does far more than just relax you – read on, you may be surprised!
IHM increases blood circulation to the head, neck and shoulders bringing oxygen and nutrients to those areas which nourishes the skin, improves sebum production, (natural oils) and stimulates hair follicles.
IHM also increases blood circulation to the brain so that more oxygen is delivered; this will help tackle mental fatigue, improve alertness, concentration and a feeling of wellbeing.
This increased blood circulation also helps relieve neck and shoulder stiffness as oxygen and nutrients are brought to the area and waste material, such as lactic acid, that have built up in those affected muscles, are expelled.
IHM increases lymphatic drainage, helping rid the body of toxins and other waste material that build up over time and thereby so aids detoxification. It also helps relieve eye-strain and tension headaches.
Indian head massage breaks down fibrocystic nodules, (commonly known as ‘knots’), which develop from tension within the muscles, caused by our modern stressful lifestyles, physical labour, poor office/driving posture, repetitive actions etc. The massage triggers the release of endorphins in the brain which create a feeling of contentment and happiness.
So there you have it, there’s much more to an Indian head massage than you might have realised!
The massage is also very beneficial for anyone who may be housebound or has restricted movement as it can easily be carried out in your home if preferred.
After your treatment, we will leave you with an aftercare leaflet which simply outlines a few recommendations to ensure you continue to receive the benefits of your massage over the following days.
Finally, an IHM does not require the removal of any clothes, therefore it can be carried out almost anywhere, including your home or workplace.
